Owners were responsible for constructing their new houses, and family and friends often banded together to raise a home. This kept labor costs down and gave new homeowners opportunities to customize their houses. By 1913… service along Santa Monica [Red Car] Air Line between downtown and the Jefferson Park area had increased to every 60 minutes. Even the Red Car, however, played only a minor role in Jefferson Park’s development.

What are some of the most popular neighborhoods in Jefferson Park?

“Many of the bungalows are being snapped up by flippers and totally redone… as a historic preservationist, I have mixed feelings about that,” she says. In the second half of the 19th century, the area was populated with farms that grew corn, hay, grapes, and citrus. Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the state House, and Republicans hold a five-seat majority in the state Senate. Out of the six Democratic candidates running to unseat Perry, news anchor Janelle Stelson and former "Top Gun" fighter pilot Mike O’Brien appear to have the best shot. The other candidates include Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels, progressive businessman John Broadhurst and former radio executive Black Lynch.

Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race and in the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District. Five Democrats and two Republicans are also battling for the open state attorney general position, once held by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro. Michelle Henry, who is completing the remainder of Shapiro’s term since he was elected governor in 2022, is not running for the position. At the state level, Democrats are hoping to hold on to their majority in the state House and take control of the state Senate. It took the arrival of the streetcar to jumpstart residential development in Jefferson Park. The Los Angeles Railway Company provided streetcar service along Adams Street west to Arlington as early as 1899. By 1905, the Los Angeles Traction Company was running a streetcar along Jefferson Street, also as far west as Arlington. The Jefferson Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) was adopted by the Los Angeles City Council in 2011.

Longworth's successor, John "Cactus Jack" Garner of Texas, left the office after just over a year to be Franklin Roosevelt's first vice president. In 1984, Jane Suren Harrington began selling real estate in the West Adams and Jefferson Park areas. Long aware of the beauty of the neighborhood, Harrington says she found herself selling former drug houses and homes that families could no longer afford after decades of ownership. From 1908 to 1940, Pacific Ready-Cut sold 37,000 ready-to-assemble homes based on 1,800 plans, plus some custom-designed ones, as practical California bungalows replaced fancy Victorians. Although most of the company’s houses were one story, it also produced two-story homes, duplexes, bungalow court apartments, hotels, gas stations and offices. A new wave of residents—lured by the early-19th-century bungalows, new transit lines, central locality, and relative affordability—are moving into this old streetcar suburb.

If the 2024 White House election is contested or tied, each state’s congressional delegation will have a single vote in deciding the winner. Currently, Democrats have a 9-8 advantage — meaning one general election race in November could make all the difference. Candidates across these races are running on some of the biggest issues facing the country — from abortion to the war in Gaza to election integrity. And the candidates whom Democratic and Republican voters pick on Tuesday could give larger insights about their views on topics that appear central to this fall's general election. All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers.

Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party, with members including Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Perry was also a key figure in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He is one of a handful of Republican representatives serving in districts that Biden won in 2020. The tacos are good -- where this place really shines, however, is with their burgers and chili. A chili cheese burger will set you back $4.75 and take you into a heavenly coma of sodium and grease. The 30-year saga began with Gingrich of Georgia, who was the first member of his party to gain "the big gavel" since the early 1950s and the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Those eight years actually made Hastert the longest-serving Republican speaker in history. But any luster left after 2006 was lost when he went to prison for bank fraud charges stemming from hush money payments he had made toa former student he admitted to having sexually abused decades earlier. The No. 2 Republican at the time did not have the votes, and the No. 3 declined to run. The chairman of the Appropriations Committee was nominated by the party conference but withdrew after a magazine story accused him of marital infidelity.

Most of them served in that long stretch when their party held the majority for four decades. The most recent Democrat, however, is Nancy Pelosi, still a House member and the House speaker emerita. She comes in at fifth on the longevity roster, having served one day shy of eight years from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.

The Goldens have worked to become part of the Jefferson Park community, starting a Buy Nothing Group for the neighborhood on Facebook, and getting to know their neighbors. According to Harrington, Jefferson Park homeowners have mostly embraced new arrivals. “One the best parts about selling in this area has been how long-time residents have welcomed newcomers, and how newcomers have integrated into the existing community,” she says. Wood for these homes was cut in the Pacific Northwest and shipped to the firm’s lumber mill in Huntington Park.

“The Expo line has been a game changer in many ways,” says Natalie Neith, who has sold hundreds of homes in the West Adams/Jefferson Park area over the past three decades. By 1930, 90 percent of the homes in Jefferson Park had been constructed, according to Hunter. The neighborhood was a mix of working- and middle-class Angelenos, with 40 percent of households having at least one foreign-born member.

Because the local districts tend to lean Democratic or Republican, the results of the primary elections can have a large sway on the race. The election on Tuesday could reveal just how salient the issue of the war is for Democratic voters — particularly in swing areas of the country. It may also forecast how other progressives facing similar challenges from moderate Democrats could fair in their races.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have essentially clinched their party’s 2024 nominations for the White House. But Pennsylvania voters on Tuesday will cast their ballots in a slew of contentious and potentially decisive congressional and state races that are still sure to make waves as the campaign chugs toward November. Prior to the GOP's 40-year sentence as the minority party, several of its speakers had risen to the top rung largely on their personal popularity among their colleagues. One was Joseph Martin of Massachusetts, who led the party in the House during two brief interludes of majority status after World War II. Both lasted only the minimum two years, the first ending with Democratic Harry S. Truman's surprise White House win in 1948. Martin was back four years later when Eisenhower was first elected president in 1952, but that tour at the top was cut short by his party's sharp losses two years later.

Black culture thrived in the neighborhood due in part to librarian Vassie Davis Wright, founder of “Our Authors Study Club” at the local library. According to the Los Angeles Sentinel, she was also a local real estate broker. During the boomtime 1880s, there were attempts to develop a residential subdivision in the area, but due to lack of public transportation it didn’t meet with much success.

Jefferson Park has a distinguished cultural history and is known for its Arts & Crafts bungalows. A portion of historic Jefferson Park is a City designated historic district, known as the Jefferson Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ). With over 2000 structures, this historic district includes an astonishing number and variety of Arts & Crafts bungalows, as well as examples of other architectural styles from the same period.
